How Much Light Do I Need?

How Much Light Do I Need For My Room?
There is actually a proven formula for calculating the proper amount of general light (usually expressed as the number of watts) you should have in each room or area of your home...and it's not difficult, just some basic arithmetic. Multiply the length of the room by the width. Then, take that number and multiply by 1.5. That will give you the suggested amount of wattage needed to light your room properly for general illumination.

Example:
Let's use a room that's 12 ft. X 16 ft. for this example. Multiply the width by the depth: 12 x 16 = 192. To calculate the total necessary wattage needed for the room, multiply the room's total square footage by 1.5: 192 x 1.5 = 288 watts.
That means an 8-light chandelier using 40-watt bulbs would give 320 watts, which is even more light than needed.

Don't forget that the color and material of a shade can impact the resulting light output. Fabrics that are darker in color or heavier in weight produce less light output. Light colored fabrics will create maximum ambient light.

Installation Feature - Choctaw Casino Resort

Stonegate Designs was pleased to be a contributing vendor for the Choctaw Casino Resort expansion project in Durant, Oklahoma for the Choctaw Nation
of Oklahoma.

As a custom hospitality lighting expert, Stonegate Designs has provided custom designs for many casinos throughout the U.S.A., including the Trump Taj Mahal, Harrah's, and the Golden Nugget.

The destination casino resort was designed by Worth Group Architects, and offers a world-class experience complete with Vegas-style signature design throughout the property.

The goal of the Choctaw Casino Resort project was to focus on the individuality of the Choctaw Nation, with a design to showcase the rich culture and heritage of the Choctaw Nation through interpretive design and tribal influences.

The $300 million casino expansion project was designed and constructed in 22 months. The resort offers guests 110,000 square feet of gaming space which houses about 3,000 slot machines, 30 poker tables and 38 table games. In addition to gaming, 204,000 square feet of hospitality space offers 330 hotel rooms with a variety of suites, an indoor/outdoor natatorium and pool, fitness center and spa.

Stonegate Designs created custom pendant fixtures with beads for the natatorium and pool, fitness center and spa, as well as guestroom corridor custom lighting, and standard GEO table lamps for the guestrooms.

Explaining GU24 Technology

What is GU24 Technology?
The Energy Star® Program has qualified the GU24 technology as a product that saves energy, money and the environment; and it requires that GU24 technology be used in all residential lighting fixture categories including wall sconces, table lamps, floor lamps, pendants, and more. California already has the same requirement, known as Title 24-2005.

GU24 is quickly becoming the new standard of lighting fixtures. It replaces the standard Edison screw lighting technology.

GU24 Technology is functionally similar to a screw base Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL), but instead of a screw base the ballast connects to the GU24 base with pins, and twist locked into place. The GU24 socket is designed to connect directly to the power line.

So why GU24 versus screw-based CFLs?

  • GU24s are rated at or above 10,000 hours
  • GU24 standardizes CFL bases for interchangeability
  • GU24s come with maximum ballast case temperature rating to insure thermal ‘fit’
  • Come with EOL circuitry for safety
  • GU24s are available in squat configurations unlike screw base
  • Allows permanent energy savings in an easily integrated design
  • Replacement bulbs will be available wherever light bulbs and fixtures are sold
  • Although initially more expensive, the money saved in the long run far outweighs the initial cost. CFLs use 1/3 the energy of an incandescent bulb and last up to 10X longer
  • Reducing energy use helps decelerate climate change by preventing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Lower energy bills for consumers and businesses
  • Boost your environmental image

At Stonegate Designs, we offer 1-piece or 2-piece GU24 designs. The1-piece GU24 base is offered at no additional charge. The 2-piece is offered for a nominal up charge.

  • 1-piece GU24 - The 1-Piece design includes one integral lamp and ballast unit, which then connects to the socket.
  • 2-Piece GU24 - The 2-Piece design includes a lamp with pins that connect to the GU24 ballast, and then the ballast connects to a GU24 socket which is installed in the lighting fixture.

If you have more questions about GU24 technology and how it can save money and energy, please contact us or visit the Energy Star® website.
